This is a 2-day knowledge workshop which provides base knowledge for the STMS category A, B or C learning blocks and the STMS Mobile learning block. The STMS Universal workshop can be run in conjunction with a category A, B or C workshop or an STMS Mobile workshop

This is a 2-day knowledge workshop which provides base knowledge for the STMS category A, B or C learning blocks and the STMS Mobile learning block.
The STMS Universal workshop covers the following topics:
- Career path
- Common TTM guidance
- STMS role, responsibilities and process
- Risk assessment
- Reviewing and implementing TMPs
- Pre-start checks
- Traffic counts
- Layout dimensions
- Worksite briefings
- Worksite checks and the on-site record
- Critical milestones
- Temporary speed limits
- Maintenance standards.
Qualification
There is a unit standard which is completed during this workshop – US 31961: Explain the requirements for the worksite under temporary traffic management.
The participant's National Student Number (NSN) is required for the unit standard to be awarded. Contact us if you have any problems finding this.
This qualification confirms successful completion of the STMS Universal workshop but cannot be used as an STMS-NP or STMS practising qualification.
Prerequisites
It is recommended that participants hold the following qualification before completing the STMS U NP workshop:
- TMO-NP warrant or US 31959: Demonstrate knowledge of stakeholder and operational requirements for temporary traffic management.
Note: The knowledge and skills covered in TMO NP are not repeated again in STMS Universal, STMS Cat A/B NP or Cat A/B Practising.
Who it is for
This is a knowledge-based workshop building towards a practising unit standard for someone who will complete the following tasks:
- an onsite STMS on a category A, B, or C road environment (or in a mobile operation).
This is helpful knowledge for any person who is intending to be: a TTM Planner, TMP Approver, TTM Auditor, Traffic Management Coordinator, Corridor Manager or a Traffic Operations Manager.
What's included in the fee for the workshop
The following is included in the workshop fee:
- Morning tea, Lunch and Afternoon tea
- Workshop resources
- Fee for assessing and awarding the unit standard.
Next steps
It is recommended that participants hold the STMS-U qualification before completing the following non-practising workshops:
- STMS Cat A
- STMS Cat B
- STMS Cat C
- STMS Mobile.
For those who need to be practising as an on-site STMS there is additional mentoring and a practical assessment for each of the categories of road (or for a mobile operation).
