STMS Cat B Practising Assessment - US 31963

This is for an STMS completing their practising Cat B assessment.

This is completed after the new STMS has had 2 sites verified to standard by a Mentor.

This is the practising assessment which allows an STMS to take charge of installing, maintaining and removing TTM at worksites on Cat B roads (rural roads, one lane each way, 70km/h or more).

Fee for assessment $750 plus $1,000 for hire of TTM vehicles (work and tail pilot), crew and equipment.

Before leaving the yard

• Initial check of TMP
• Carry out vehicle checks
• Carry out equipment check

Set up the site

• Check the TMP suits the operation
• Carry out TTM crew briefing
• Direct the installation of TTM
• Ensure equipment is used correctly
• STMS drive through worksite inspection
• Complete paperwork

Maintaining the site

• Carry out visitor inductions
• Ensure health and safety procedures are followed for safe entry to and exit from the worksite
• Monitor traffic volumes and queues
• Monitor pedestrian numbers and special requirements
• Carry out site checks and self audits
• Implement contingencies

Removal of TTM

• Direct removal of TTM
• Ensure equipment is stowed correctly
• Complete paperwork.

You will require an STMS hi-vis garment and safety boots.

Sun protection is required on sunny days. Wet weather gear is required if rain is likely. Expect the unexpected.

• It is recommended that participants hold the following qualification before completing the STMS Cat B practising assessment: 

  • STMS Cat B NP warrant or unit standard 31962: Explain the requirements for the worksite under temporary traffic management for a road environment as defined in CoPTTM.

  The participant will also need to have completed the two STMS Cat B Verified Sites. 

  A person who has held a L1 or L2/3 STMS warrant in the past may have the necessary knowledge and skills to attend the workshop without holding STMS Cat B NP qualification.

  • Positioning of signs   
  • Tapers
  • Managing traffic on the shoulder and lane          
  • Alternating flow

  • Mobile operations
